The Highlands

(Berkeley Lake, Potter Highlands, Sloan's Lake, Sunnyside, Upper 15th Street, West Highlands)

One of Denver's older neighborhoods, the historic Highlands in Northwest Denver has been Bradford's base of operations since 1994. The area overlooks the entire downtown area and the Central Platte Valley. Commonly referred to as simply The Highlands, the neighborhood was originally founded in 1858 by William H. Larimer, a gold and land prospector, as Denver City and was incorporated into Denver in the 1890s. During its long and storied existence, the area has been home to waves of first-generation immigrants from the Scottish, to Germans, and most recently, Italians and Mexican Americans.

Defining The Highlands

The area is bordered by Sheridan Boulevard to the west, 46th Avenue to the north, Interstate 25 to the east, and Colfax Avenue to the South. It actually is composed of six distinct, yet overlapping neighborhoods--Berkeley Lake, Potter Highlands, Sloan's Lake, Sunnyside, Upper 15th Street, and West Highlands.

For geographical convenience, the main boundaries of each area as follows: Berkeley Lake: 38th to 46th, Sheridan to Federal; Potter Highlands: 29th to 38th, Zuni to Federal; Sloan's Lake: Colfax to 29th, Federal to Sheridan; Sunnyside: 38th to 46th, Federal to Tejon; Upper 15th Street: 15th to 29th, Boulder to Platte Street; West Highlands: 29th to 38th, Sheridan to Federal.

A mix of art and architecture

The Highlands is home to some of Denver's most spectacular architectural homes, from Victorian mansions to English Tudors to Craftsman-style bungalows and old-world farmhouses. Tree-lined streets, beautiful parks, and lakes dot the landscape of the tight-knit, diverse community.

Led by the revitalization of the residential and business corridor at 32nd Avenue and Lowell, and most recently, of Tennyson Street, and the Upper 15th Street district, the area has undergone a renaissance during the past decade, melding historic preservation with economic development. It is home to exceptional neighborhood restaurants, cultural events, art galleries, and the historic Lakeside Amusement Park. Downtown sporting events, restaurants, and amusements are just moments away. Today, The Highlands is a thriving mix of cultures, influences, and energy that identifies it as one of Denver's unique and desirable neighborhoods.
